Should Sunday’s clash finish goalless, it will be the first time the system has appeared in a competitive game in England.
An FA statement read: ‘The FA has today announced that a different order of kicks for Kicks from the Penalty Mark (KFPM) will be trialled at Sunday’s FA Community Shield supported by McDonald’s – the first time the new format will be used competitively in the country,’
The system has been developed as a means of combatting the statistic that 60% of teams that take the first penalty in a shoot-out go on to win.
The new format is based on tennis tie-breaks and sees the team that kick first alternate AB BA AB BA and so on instead of AB AB AB AB.
