Director, Nigerian Army Archives, Brigadier-General William Bosman, has charged school proprietors, especially teachers and games masters, to always scout for talents among pupils and students through inter-house school competitions.
He noted that school meet serves as a platform to fish out talented students who can be groomed to become professionals who could also represent Nigeria in international sport engagements in future.
Bosman gave the charge in his remarks while speaking at the inter house sports competition of the Jextoban Secondary School, Ibafo, Ogun State.
“It is high time teachers began to scout for talents through school meets. Inter-house sport competition should not be seen as annual ritual that must be performed but a forum where talents that would represent the country in future can be identified,” he said.
Bosman, while praising Jextoban school authorities for placing high premium on sporting activities, also charged that using academics only as a means of performance assessment of schools and their pupils should be discouraged.
According to him, sporting activities should also be used to assess overall performance of schools and their pupils.
While speaking at the event, the principal of the Lagos arm of the school, Mr. E. A. Adegoke, recalled how sporting activities were used to communicate and control kingdoms.
He explained how batons were used as strolls to deliver messages of kings and presidents at the helm.
Adegoke also spoke of the importance and the use of sporting activities in modern day, especially in the area of governance, military, medicine, education, among others, contending that children’s development cannot be enhanced or promoted without harnessing their sporting talents.
He said this was why Jextoban was in the forefront of introducing compulsory Wednesday sporting activities in the school for students and teachers.
“The school meet today attests to our love for sports. We focus on all round development in our school, because we produce all round students,” he said.
Meanwhile, Blue House finished tops at the meet ahead of Green House, while Yellow House finished third.
