THE Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Nasarawa State Chapter, has urged players of Nasarawa United Football Club to justify government’s spending on the club following the upgrading of the state township stadium by the state government.
This was contained in a statement signed and issued to newsmen in Lafia, by the state chairman of SWAN, Abari Solomon.
According to him, the upgrading of the stadium would enable the club to meet up with the specifications of the League Management Company (LMC) for the 2016/2017 Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL), which began on Saturday.
The chairman added that government’s huge spending in sporting activities is a demonstration of its readiness to impact positively on the lives of people in the state, especially youths.
“We want to applaud Governor Almakura for his commitment and determination to promote sporting activities in the state and we pledge the support of sports writers towards achieving the desired goal,” he said.
He, however, appealed to corporate organisations and other stakeholders in the sports sector to complement government’s effort and ensure that the sport sector is given its rightful place in the scheme of things.
The chairman also pledged the association’s unflinching support in promoting grass-roots sports in the state, stressing that sport is a sector that promotes unity, create employment for the teeming youths and generate revenue to the government.
