Hosts Kastina state on Wednesday defeated Kebbi state 2-0 to win the maiden edition of President Muhammadu Buhari National Peace U-18 Boys Soccer Cup organised by the Youth Sports Federation of Nigeria (YSFON).
The week-long competition which was sponsored by the Kastina state government drew people from all walks of life in the final at the Muhammadu Dikko Stadium, Katsina.
Earlier in the day at the same venue, Bauchi state spanked Sokoto state 5-1 to claim the bronze.
Speaking with journalists, Senior Special Assistant (SSA) on Special Duties to Governor of Kastina state, Honourable Tanimu Sada Saad commended YSFON for its foresight in organising the tournament.
He was particularly impressed with the football artistry displayed by all the participating teams, particularly during the final between the hosts and Kebbi state.
Saad stated that the tournament served also as a tool to maintain peace, not only in Kastina state, but in the whole country.
He charged YSFON to continue with the good work of not only discovering talents for the country but to ensure that any of their competitions is organised to sustain peace and unity among Nigerian youths.
Saad also commended the Kastina state government for its efforts at developing sports in the state and the sponsorship of the victorious U-13 soccer team to Lagos recently.
“Personally, I am donating a set of jerseys and 10 balls to the team for winning the championship. I also want to appeal to the state government to host the team to a civic reception for making Kastina state proud,” Saad, who is also a patron of YSFON in Kastina state said.
