Nominations for the 2017 Nigerian Sports Award have begun according to the organisers – Unmissable Incentives Limited.
The Nigerian Sports Award which is initiated to recognise and celebrate outstanding accomplishments by Nigerian sportsmen and women both locally and internationally for a period of one year. is scheduled to hold on Friday, November 17 at Eko Hotel, Lagos.
Speaking at a press conference in Lagos, the new chairman of the award panel, Dr Kweku Tandoh said plans are in top gear to deliver a transparent and fair selection process.
Tandoh explained that deserving categories will be awarded this year during the award ceremony, saying that some changes would be made in line with the level of activity in some of the sports.
According to him, the categories for nominations include: Ball Sports Person of the Year (Lawn Tennis, Table tennis, Basketball, Handball), Coach of the Year, Combat Sports Person of the Year (Karate, Judo, Taekwondo, Wrestling, Boxing), Discovery of the Year, Footballer of the Year (Women), Footballer of the Year (Men), Special Sports Person of the Year, Sports Administrator of the Year and Sports Governor of the Year.
Other categories are: Sportsman of the Year, Sportswoman of the Year, Sports Journalist of the Year (Radio), Sports Journalist of the Year (TV), Sports Journalist of the Year (Print), Sports Photo Journalist of the Year, School Sports Award, Team of the Year, Track and Field Star of the Year and Weightlifter of the Year.
In his remarks, veteran journalist, Mr Fabio Lanipekun, a member of the new panel assured Nigerians that the award would live up to its desired expectation saying: “This panel consists of people that have made solid contribution to sports in Nigeria. So, I believe we will not disappoint. We will continue to support the award”.
