Owolabi Olajide of the Abeokuta Golf Club has won the 21st Tiger Amateur Open Golf Championship with 150 scores over two days at the Adekunle Fajuyi Cantonment Golf Course in Ibadan, Oyo State.
Olajide emerged victorious in a highly-competitive tournament which saw players coming from different golf clubs around the country.
Speaking at the final award ceremony, the captain of the Tiger Golf Club, Dr John Dongo, commended the array of players who participated in the championship, saying more young people are now showing interest in golf, and this is good for the game in the country.
“If we are, therefore, to make the game of golf more attractive to young Nigerians, then we need to have more tournaments, while more corporate organisations should signup to sponsor such tournaments,” Dr Dongo said.
In his remarks at the final ceremony, the General Officer Commanding (GOC), 2 Division of the Nigerian Army, Major General C.M Abraham, expressed satisfaction that the Division has been able to sustain the championship in the last 21 years, saying this the Division’s contribution to the development of golf in the country.
In his goodwill message, Mr Nicolas Vervelde, Managing Director of the Nigerian Breweries, sponsor of the tournament, explained that his company’s partnership with the 2 Division was aimed at promoting golf, while hoping that the company would continue to support the championship.
