Wayne Rooney will not start for England against the USA, according to boss Gareth Southgate.
Southgate revealed talks over a Rooney farewell bow have been in the pipeline for a year now, saying he “deserves a send-off”.
The England boss said: “There have been ongoing discussions since Wayne retired about paying tribute to him and his England career.
“Those discussions started 12 months ago. We have an opportunity with the game at Wembley to pay tribute.
“I am still able to look to the future with the squad we’ve picked, but we’ve talked a lot about the history of the shirt.

“We have brought former players back to speak and present shirts. I think all the players respect Wayne’s contribution and that he deserves the best possible send-off.”
Southgate went on to address the widespread controversy surrounding the call-up, saying he’s “pleased to honour” Rooney.
The boss added: “I understand it has caused a lot of debate. Some are not happy about it and some are happy.
“I have been in the unfortunate position to leave him out of the squad but I am pleased to honour him.
