A member of Tiger Golf Club (TGC), Tunde Salami has won the eighth Elizabeth Adesola Akinjide Memorial Golf tournament, held at at the Tiger Golf Club, Adekunle Fajuyi Cantonment, Ibadan.
Salami, with Net score of 69, clinched the title ahead of last year’s winner, Adesina Bello and Godwin Idoko on count back.
Lekan Ogunbameru of Ibadan Golf Club won the Gross with a score of 77 while a member of David Mark Golf and Country Club, Otukpo, J. Igbetua won in the lady category.
Hannah Obadina emerged victorious in the Gross in the lady category.
“I really trained hard for two competitions—Elizabeth Akinjide Memorial and Tiger Open —but I have succeded in one and my focus is now on the Tiger Open which I hope to win as well.”
The son-in-law to Akinjide, Ibukun Fakeye, said the tournament would be sustained.
“It is in memory of Chief Akinjide’s wife, our mother and it has been on for the past eight years because of the passion daddy has for the game of golf,” he said.
Chairman, Local Organising Committee (LOC), Chris Nzekea, in his remarks said: “The tournament has been on a geometric progression commensurated with sponsors’ progressive increase in the sponsorship budget.
“I thank the Akinjide family for their commitment to immortalising this great woman of virtue through this annual event.”
Meanwhile, the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 2 Division, Nigerian Army, Major General K.I Abdulkarim, who is also the patron of TGC said the annual tournament has continued to increase in terms of glamour and standard.
“I am immensely happy that we have been able to keep the event rolling over the years. It is my belief that the Elizabeth Adesola Akinjide Golf Tournament will last longer in order to fulfil the expectations of the sponsors.
“I’m impressed by the huge turn out and the spirit of sportmanship amongst the participants. It is an indication that the tournament is gaining more ground.
“I commend the organisers of this tournament whose tireless effort and competence have made this occasion a resounding success,” he said.
