10 years after EPL title win, Leicester suffer League One relegation

Leicester, the 2016 Premier League winner, has been relegated from the Championship to League One following a 2-2 draw with play-off chasers Hull.

The Foxes’ fate was sealed following Tuesday’s stalemate at the King Power Stadium, where they failed to secure the maximum points required to keep their survival hopes alive.

Despite clawing back to lead 2-1, they were eventually pegged back, confirming a result that sent them down.

This marks a devastating second consecutive relegation for the club and their third demotion in just four seasons. It is a sobering “full-circle” moment for a side that captured the world’s imagination as unlikely Premier League champions in 2016.

Leicester’s campaign had actually begun with promise under former QPR manager Martí Cifuentes, suffering only one defeat in their opening 10 fixtures.

However, the momentum vanished at the turn of the year, leading to a dismal run of form that ultimately anchored them in the drop zone.

Worry increased when they were deducted six points in February for breaching the EFL’s spending rules, which left them one place above the drop zone.

Cifuentes was swiftly sacked, and Gary Rowett took over, but results have failed to improve, with just one league win since he took charge.

A recent defeat to relegation rivals Portsmouth left them on the brink, with fans angry as they engaged in a spat with midfielder Harry Winks outside Fratton Park.
