11 dead after shooting at football match in Mexico

No fewer than 11 people had been killed after gunmen opened fire at a football match in central Mexico on Sunday, local media reported on Monday.

In addition to those killed, 12 others were injured.

People were playing football when the gunmen arrived in two vehicles and opened fire on those present, the newspaper El Sol de Salamanca reported, citing local authorities.

The motive for the attack in the state of Guanajuato was not immediately known.

Police reportedly collected at least 100 shell casings.

Guanajuato had Mexico’s highest homicide rate in 2025.
