Viktor Gyokeres has been crowned the winner of the Gerd Muller Trophy at the 2025 Ballon d’Or ceremony after a prolific season for Sporting Lisbon and Sweden.
The Swedish striker netted 54 goals in 52 matches across club and country during the 2024/25 campaign, finishing as the continent’s top scorer. His tally played a decisive role in Sporting’s success in the Primeira Liga and Taca de Portugal, as well as Sweden’s run in the Nations League.
The award, previously known as the Striker of the Year or Best Striker Award, recognises the highest-scoring player from the previous season, counting goals for both clubs and national teams. Since its introduction in 2021, it has honoured some of Europe’s most prolific forwards.
Gyokeres joins an elite list of winners. Kylian Mbappe and Harry Kane shared the prize last year after each scoring 52 goals. Erling Haaland won in 2023 with 56, while Robert Lewandowski took the first two editions with 69 and 57 goals respectively.
At 27, Gyokeres has firmly established himself as one of Europe’s deadliest finishers, with his powerful runs, intelligent positioning, and clinical finishing making him a consistent threat in front of goal.
The striker’s recognition is also a significant moment for Portuguese football, with Sporting Lisbon seeing one of their players honoured on the Ballon d’Or stage for his exploits.
