2026 WCQ: No cash incentive can save Zimbabwe from Super Eagles — Sodje

Former Super Eagles defender, Sam Sodje, has dismissed reports that the Zimbabwean government’s $150,000 per player incentive will help their national team overcome Nigeria in the upcoming World Cup qualifier in Uyo on 25 March 2025.

Reacting to the report, Sodje acknowledged Zimbabwe’s desperation to qualify for the tournament but insisted that financial motivation would not be enough to overcome Nigeria’s quality and determination.

“At first, I was shocked by the huge amount of dollars being promised to Zimbabwe’s players.

“But after thinking about it, I understand why they need such motivation. Unlike the Nigerian national team, they require an extra push because our players already know the importance of this game,” Sodje stated.

Drawing from his experience as a former international, Sodje emphasised that no match is more significant to a professional footballer than a World Cup qualifier.

“The World Cup is the pinnacle of football. Every player dreams of being there, and with the calibre of international stars in our squad, there is no need for any added financial motivation.

“The Super Eagles players understand what is at stake,” he affirmed.

Sodje further stressed that victory in Uyo is crucial, not only for the players’ careers but also for Nigeria’s international reputation and the passion of millions of fans.

“Our players know that winning is a must—not just for themselves, but for our country’s image and the countless Nigerians who live and breathe football.

“The benefits of Nigeria playing at the World Cup cannot be overstated,” he said.

Concluding with confidence, Sodje declared that Nigeria’s objective is clear: “The Super Eagles are going to Uyo to win—nothing more. As we say in our local lingua, the Super Eagles must and shall win.  End of discussion.”
