The Aare Onakakanfo of Yoruba land, Otunba Gani Adams has lamented the sorry/poor state of the National Stadium, Lagos and Obafemi Awolowo stadium describing it as an eyesore to sport-loving Nigerians.
Adams while speaking with Tribunesport at Casablanca Mohammed V International Airport, Morocco on his way to Milan for a reception in his honour said he was near tears Tuesday when the Oodua People’s Congress used the facility at the National stadium for an event and he saw the current state the stadium is.
“It is very sad, they just abandoned the facility that was once our pride and national monument in the South West without paying attention to it. That was where we used to watch good players then play for this great country but go there now, it’s a shadow of itself,” he said.
The OPC leader continued, “How will they bring quality match to the place when it is not in good shape to use. They now take all our matches to Uyo now denying us from the part of the country good matches whereas, we have better facility here unattended to , left to rotten away. Even the Obafemi Awolowo stadium, which has been under renovation for some years now was yet to be completed. The legacy left behind by the great Chief Obafemi Awolowo is not in good condition for use. “That is not right at all, our government should not allow such monuments rots away said The Oodua boss.
Speaking further, Adams thus called on the federal government to look in that direction and pay necessary attention to its renovation so that not only Lagosians will come to the venue to watch good games but football fans from the south west zones as well,” he said.
