Manchester United assistant coach Rui Faria has congratulated referee Mark Clattenburg for sending off midfielder Ander Herrera.

The Spaniard was given his marching orders after 68 minutes of their 0-0 draw with Burnley on Saturday, after manager Jose Mourinho was sent to the stands at half time.

Herrera saw red after picking up two yellow cards, with some claiming the second was given when the player simply slipped over.

Faria, who may or may not have been being sarcastic with his comment, didn’t want to say much on the matter.

‘I just want to say fantastic work from the referee,’ said the coach, who came out to face the press instead of Mourinho.

The stalemate with Burnley continues a torrid run in the Premier League for United, who have now failed to win in four top-flight matches.

Some had hoped that a mid-week victory over Manchester City in the EFL Cup could have kick started their campaign, but it appears that it will take more than that to get Mourinho’s side going.
