Alex Iwobi has reached a major milestone in Nigerian football after making his 100th appearance for the Super Eagles, becoming only the fourth player to reach the landmark in the country’s history.
The Fulham midfielder reached the figure during Nigeria’s international friendly against Portugal on Wednesday, a match that placed him in the same elite group as Ahmed Musa, Vincent Enyeama and Joseph Yobo in Nigeria’s “Club 100”.
Iwobi made his senior debut for Nigeria on 8 October 2015 against DR Congo and has since remained a regular figure across multiple coaching eras, contributing in competitive qualifiers, Africa Cup of Nations tournaments and FIFA World Cup campaigns.
Over the past decade, he has featured at the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia and multiple AFCON tournaments, becoming one of the most consistent midfield options in the Super Eagles setup.
Super Eagles ‘Club 100’
Ahmed Musa remains Nigeria’s most-capped player with 111 appearances, a record built over more than a decade of international football, including multiple World Cup appearances and AFCON tournaments.
Vincent Enyeama sits second on 101 caps, having served as Nigeria’s first-choice goalkeeper during one of the most stable periods in the team’s modern history, including the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) triumph.
Joseph Yobo, former captain and defensive leader, finished his international career with 100 appearances after anchoring the Super Eagles for more than 13 years and captaining the team at multiple major tournaments.
Iwobi now joins that group, reaching 100 caps and becoming the fourth player to enter the century club.

A decade in national colours
Iwobi’s journey began when he broke into the national team in 2015 while still developing at Arsenal, and he quickly became part of Nigeria’s core attacking structure, valued for his versatility in midfield and on the wings.
One of his defining moments came during the 2018 World Cup qualifying campaign when he scored in the decisive 1-0 win over Zambia in Uyo on 7 October 2017, a result that confirmed Nigeria’s qualification for the tournament in Russia.
Since then, he has remained a fixture in the squad through AFCON campaigns, World Cup qualifiers and international friendlies, adapting to different managerial styles while maintaining his place in the selection pool.
Longevity in this Super Eagles era
At 30, Iwobi is still active in the Super Eagles setup and remains among the most experienced players in the current squad.
His century of appearances places him in a group that spans different generations of Nigerian football, from Enyeama’s golden defensive era to Musa’s long-standing leadership role.
With Nigeria continuing to rebuild and integrate younger players, Iwobi’s experience and tactical flexibility are expected to remain valuable as he pushes further up the all-time appearance rankings in the coming years.
