United States President, Donald Trump, will attend the FIFA World Cup final on July 19 and join FIFA president, Gianni Infantino, in presenting the trophy to the winners.

The final will be played at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, one of the key venues for the tournament being jointly hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico.

Trump, 80, has not attended any matches since the competition began on June 11, but FIFA’s president said the US leader will be present for the tournament’s showpiece event.

“We will be together with the president enjoying the final and handing the trophy to the winner, of course,” Infantino told Fox.

Asked whether they would present the trophy together, Infantino replied: “Of course, we are together all the time.”

The United States is hosting 78 of the tournament’s 104 matches, with the remaining games taking place across Canada and Mexico.

Despite the tournament being staged largely in the United States, Trump has so far not attended a match.

Andrew Giuliani, executive director of the White House’s World Cup task force, told the Telegraph that Trump’s absence has been due to a busy schedule.

According to Giuliani, the president prefers to “leave people watching” regarding his public appearances.

Trump was present at the UFC White House event last week and recently attended the NBA Finals in New York, becoming the first sitting US president to do so. During Game Three, he was booed by sections of the crowd as the New York Knicks lost 115-111 to the San Antonio Spurs.

MetLife Stadium, which will host the World Cup final, was also the venue for last year’s Club World Cup final.

Trump’s appearance at the World Cup final will place him at the centre of one of the biggest sporting events in the world as the tournament concludes in New Jersey.
