Erling Haaland scored an 86th-minute winner as Norway defeated Ivory Coast 2-1 in the FIFA World Cup Round of 32 to book a last-16 meeting with Brazil.
The Manchester City striker, who had been largely subdued for most of the match in Dallas, tapped home from close range after Patrick Berg’s cutback to seal Norway’s first-ever victory in a World Cup knockout match.
The goal also extended Haaland’s remarkable scoring run to 13 consecutive competitive international matches for Norway.
Haaland settles tense contest
Norway took the lead in the 39th minute through Antonio Nusa after the RB Leipzig winger cut inside from the left and curled a superb right-footed effort into the top corner.

Ivory Coast responded in the second half after manager Emerse Fae introduced Amad Diallo from the bench. The Manchester United winger, who had surprisingly started the match among the substitutes, levelled the score in the 74th minute with an impressive solo effort after beating two defenders before finishing calmly.
Moments earlier, Amad had also made a crucial defensive contribution by clearing Torbjorn Heggem’s close-range volley off the goal line.
With extra time looming, Haaland capitalised on Berg’s low cross to score the decisive goal and send Norway through.
Amad shines
Ivory Coast struggled to create clear opportunities in the opening half after Fae opted for a more defensive 4-1-4-1 formation. The introduction of Amad transformed their attack, but the Elephants were unable to find a second equaliser.
Teenage forward Yan Diomande was kept quiet throughout the contest, while Amad almost forced extra time with a late free-kick that Norway goalkeeper Orlan Nyland pushed away.
Odegaard provides key influence
Norway captain Martin Odegaard quietly controlled the midfield and created the opening goal for Nusa. The Arsenal midfielder became only the third player on record to register an assist in each of his first three FIFA World Cup appearances.
Haaland’s winner was his fifth goal of the tournament, underlining his importance to Norway’s campaign.
Norway to face Brazil
Norway will play Brazil in the Round of 16 after the South Americans came from behind to defeat Japan.
The match is scheduled for Sunday, 5 July, with kick-off at 21:00 BST. The winners could face England in the quarter-finals.
