Sinner defeats Djokovic to reach Wimbledon final

Defending champion, Jannik Sinner, defeated Novak Djokovic in straight sets to book his place in the Wimbledon final, ending the Serbian’s latest bid to win a record 25th Grand Slam singles title.

The world number one produced a dominant display to secure a 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 victory and set up a title clash with Alexander Zverev.

Sinner repeated last year’s semi-final success over Djokovic, denying the 39-year-old another chance to equal Roger Federer’s record of eight Wimbledon men’s singles titles.

The Italian was in complete control throughout the match, not facing a break point until midway through the third set. When Djokovic finally earned his only opportunity, Sinner responded with an ace before closing out the contest with a flawless service game.

The victory marked Sinner’s 99th Grand Slam match win and made him the first Italian man to reach multiple Wimbledon singles finals. The four-time Grand Slam champion will now contest the seventh major final of his career against French Open champion Zverev, who advanced after defeating British wildcard Arthur Fery.

“It’s the most special tournament we have. It means a lot to me to play another final here,” Sinner said.

“Of course, playing against Novak, he is a huge inspiration – not only for you guys but for the new generation – what he is still doing is amazing, incredible.

“We always have very, very tough matches. I’m very happy with this performance.”

For Djokovic, the defeat means he must wait longer in his pursuit of a standalone record 25th Grand Slam singles title, which would move him ahead of Margaret Court on the all-time list.

The Serbian, who received a warm ovation as he left Centre Court, also missed the opportunity to equal Federer’s record haul of eight Wimbledon men’s singles crowns.
