Nigeria took a huge step towards reaching the last 16 at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) with a 1-0 win over hosts Ivory Coast in Group A.
In the first half, Osimhen missed a good chance to give Jose Peseiro’s side the lead in the first half as he kicked the ball over the bar following a fine through pass from Samuel Chukwueze.
However, in the 55th minute, Ousmane Diomande caught Victor Osimhen in the box, and captain William Troost-Ekong gave Nigeria the lead via a powerful penalty.
Roared on by a raucous crowd, the Ivorians pushed hard for an equaliser but failed to create a clear chance against a solid Super Eagles defence.
The match eventually ended 1-0 in favour of the Super Eagles.
Nigeria leapfrogged the Elephants to go second in Group A and are behind leaders Equatorial Guinea, who beat Guinea-Bissau 4-2 earlier on Thursday, on a head-to-head record.
Ivory Coast are in third position with 3 points from the same number of games.
Meanwhile, Equatorial Guinea are on top of the group with goal difference ahead of Nigeria, while Guinea-Bissau are in fourth position with no point.
Nigeria will now face Guinea-Bissau in their last group game.
