AFCON 2025: Mahrez tips Super Eagles for glory

… says Morocco his last AFCON appearance

Desert Foxes of Algeria skipper and 2016 African Footballer of the Year, Riyad Mahrez, has tipped the Super Eagles of Nigeria for continental glory at the ongoing African Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco.

Nigeria, through goals from Victor Osimhen and Akor Adams, defeated Algeria to book a semi-final spot against the host, the Atlas Lions of Morocco, in a game already tagged final before final by football pundits.

Mahrez, who currently plies his trade with Al-Ahli in the Saudi Pro League, said Nigeria has good players that can deliver the trophy if they can get their acts together.

AFCON 2025: Gusau expresses confidence in Super Eagles

“Maybe it will be the time for Nigeria to win. They have a good generation, but sometimes you can have a good generation, and you don’t win it. It is really difficult to win, but I think they have a good chance,” the 2016 CAF Footballer of the Year stated.

The former Manchester City and Leicester City of England forward, however, hinted that the 2025 AFCON would be his last continental appearance, having featured in more than 20 games and winning the competition in 2019.

He added. “My final African Cup that is for sure. I wouldn’t be playing in the African Cup after six African Cups. More than 20 games. I’m happy that I brought one big star for my country and its football, you know. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose.”
