AFCON: Six players to watch in Nigeria vs South Africa clash

The Super Eagles of Nigeria will be taking on the Bafana Bafana of South Africa later today. Both teams have been impressive. However, only one of them would make it to the final of the 2024 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) by the end of the game.

Both teams have showcased strong defensive performances, with four consecutive clean sheets and reliance on goalkeepers based in South Africa.

The key to securing victory will depend on which team can effectively create and exploit the half-spaces in the final third, thus breaking through the resilient defence that characterises both sides.

In this piece, we take a look at three players from each team to look out for in today’s game which is slated to come up at the 40,000-capacity Stade de la Paix in Bouaké, Côte d’Ivoire.

STANLEY NWABALI

For more than two years, Stanley Nwabali has been plying his trade in Chipper United, a South Africa-based football club. Later today, he gets to be in the goalpost for Nigeria as they face South Africa. He hopes to keep South Africa from scoring and more importantly, strive to continue his impressive show at the tournament.

RONWEN WILLIAMS

Much has been said and written about the famous South African shot-stopper. No doubt, the Super Eagles of Nigeria have a daunting task of surmounting this impressive goalkeeper. Beyond their 2-0 defeat to Mali in the group stage, Ronwen Williams has been impressive as he has kept four clean sheets. The Super Eagles’ desire to reach the AFCON Finals surely has to contend with the Maverick goalkeeper.

VICTOR OSIMHEN

The Napoli forward has been instrumental in the current success of Super Eagle. He replicates his club form in the Super Eagles. His deft passes lead to Ademola Lookman’s two goals against Cameroon. The 2023 African Footballer of the Year hopes to continue this impressive trail later today.

Osimhen has scored just one goal in five games, but his power play and harrying of defenders have helped Nigeria offensively.

PERCY TAU

The Al Ahly of Egypt player has been impressive for South Africa so far. He has always shown up when it matters in the tournament as he converted from the penalty spot in South Africa’s 4-0 win against neighbours Namibia. Percy Tau deserves more attention in today’s game.

ADEMOLA LOOKMAN

Since his debut for Nigeria over a year ago, 2023 AFCON seems to have given Lookan the chance to shine. His dazzling two goals in the last match remain etched in the memory of football fans, likewise his solo strike against Angola in the quarter-final.

Undoubtedly, Nigeria’s stand-out performer in the tournament thus far. The 26-year-old Atalanta man has netted three crucial goals—all during the knock-out stages—propelling the Super Eagles past formidable opponents like Cameroon and Angola.

MOTHOBI MVALA

South Africa has conceded not many goals at this year’s AFCON, this is all down to the solidity of Mothobi Mvala’s strong defence. His pristine combination with Ronwen Williams has been difficult for opponent attackers to penetrate. His intimidating stature sometimes scares the opponent.

He has brought all these arsenals to bear while playing against some of Africa’s finest, would today be an exception, only time would tell.
