Nigeria’s men’s basketball team, D’Tigers, open their 2025 FIBA AfroBasket campaign in Luanda with a mission to reclaim the continental title they last won a decade ago.
With a glittering record that includes gold in 2015, four silver medals (1997, 1999, 2003, 2017), and three bronzes (1995, 2005, 2011), D’Tigers remain one of Africa’s basketball powerhouses.
National Sports Commission (NSC), Director General, Hon. Bukola Olopade, has challenged the team to make a statement from day one.
“We have the talent, the drive, and the heart. Now is the time to dominate the boards, run the floor, and light it up. We are not just here to compete; we are here to win it all,” he said.
Nigeria’s opener pits them against group stage opponents Madagascar, a side making their fifth AfroBasket appearance. The D’Tigers, known for their pace, power, and squad depth, will be looking to fine-tune their combinations ahead of bigger tests against defending champions Tunisia and Cameroon.
Despite being favourites, NBA star Josh Okogie insists the team is keeping complacency in check. “Every game matters. We respect every opponent,” he said.
Madagascar’s record, 17 games played, 3 wins, 14 losses, may not impress on paper, but their spirited, fast-paced style could challenge Nigeria’s defensive focus.
