Akpeyi will improve further ―Agu

Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr and goalkeeper coach Alloy Agu continue to play Daniel Akpeyi as the starting goalkeeper with the Kaizer Chiefs star making his fourth appearance at the Africa Cup of Nations in the 2-1 win over South Africa on Wednesday evening.

One of the main talking points after the four matches played by the national team at the AFCON has been the performance of Akpeyi who is jittery and prone to making mistakes.

Agu believes Akpeyi is growing in confidence with each game but noted that there is still room for improvement.

Asked what he has done to ensure Akpeyi performs well, Agu told the Super Eagles Media team: ”We have been talking and we’ve been working. Confidence is being acquired by your daily routine, by what you do.

”He has played the first game for us, played the second and third game for us. Eventually, the next game you expect him to do better than what he has done before.

”When we look at what he has done before he has not done badly but there is always room for improvement and we are working on it to make sure that Daniel and the other two goalkeepers are on top of their game.”

Francis Uzoho had been the outright first-choice goalkeeper for the Super Eagles but has slipped down the pecking order due to a lack of playing time in the second half of last season at Anorthosis Famagusta.
