Kevin Akpoguma
Nigeria coach Gernot Rohr has described Hoffenheim defender Kevin Akpoguma as an “excellent match” for the Super Eagles.
The coach embarked on a scouting trip to Germany this past weekend after overseeing Nigeria’s recent matches against Algeria and Argentina.
Rohr was able to watch a Akpoguma, a long-term target for the Nigerian Football Federation, in action for his club side and has become an admirer of the 22-year-old.
“I watched him play for Hoffenheim against Frankfurt on Saturday. Kevin is an excellent match for the players we are on the lookout for,” Rohr told SWR.
“But he’ll have to decide soon whether he wants to wear the colours of Nigeria and I’ll call him in the next few days.”
When asked about Rohr’s plans to cap him, Germany-born Akpoguma pledged loyalty to the country of his birth: “That honours me, of course, but I’m German, I was born here, so I should play for Germany too.”
It will be recalled that Akpoguma captained the German team which eliminated Nigeria’s Flying Eagles from the 2015 FIFA U-20 World Cup with a 1-0 scoreline.
