Alexis Sanchez sets unwanted record after his Arsenal penalty miss

September 17, 2016

Alexis Sanchez has become the first Arsenal player in Premier League history to miss his first two penalties.

Sanchez fortuitously opened the scoring against Hull City on Saturday as Alex Iwobi’s strike deflected off the Chilean’s heel past Eldin Jakupovic.

The Gunners were then given the chance to double their lead from the spot as Jake Livermore handled the ball on the line.

But instead of Santi Cazorla stepping up to take the penalty, Sanchez took command, but his effort forced an excellent save low down from Jakupovic.

Sanchez’s first penalty miss came just a few months after his £31.7 million arrival from Barcelona in December 2014.

Once again, Cazorla was on the pitch but passed up the chance to take the penalty, and Sanchez’s low effort was saved by QPR goalkeeper Rob Green.

Fortunately for Arsenal, they ran out 2-1 winners on that occasion.
