Allardyce backs Lampard to become Newcastle manager

Sam Allardyce has urged former Chelsea boss Frank Lampard to become Newcastle United’s new manager.

Newcastle’s search for their first permanent appointment since the £305 million Saudi-backed takeover was dealt a blow this week when Unai Emery turned down a move to St James’ Park.

Lampard, who has been out of work since he was sacked by Chelsea in January, has been linked with Newcastle.

And Allardyce believes the 43-year-old should be pushing for the vacancy.

“If I were Frank I would jump at the chance,’ Allardyce told talkSPORT.

“He’s rested. He’s gained the experience at Derby and Chelsea.

“His first season at Chelsea was brilliant under very, very tight restrictions and got them into the Champions League.

“Then when they spent that bit of money they didn’t gel and boom he’s gone. I think he needs to fight back.

“If the club has got money, then there’s no better place for Frank than to take Newcastle on, I would say. Maybe that might be the owners’ view. It would nice to see a British manager take charge, anyway.”
