Alfred Amubioya last weekend crowned the champion of the 9th Elizabeth Adesola Akinjide Memorial Golf tournament which ended last weekend at the Tiger Golf Club, Odogbo, Ibadan.

Amubioya, a member of TGC won the one-day tourney with 67 Nets ahead of former Ibadan Golf Club captain, Akin Funmilayo who played 68 Nets.

An elated Amubioya while speaking with Corporatesport expressed joy at winning the tournament after his absence in the last edition, just as he lauded his Caddy, Mark Bimbol (War face) for contributing to his victory through tutelage.

“I feel so happy because last year I slummed on the same tournament on hole 1. Determination and more importantly divine favour helpmed me to win this year coupled with constant practice. I play with a very great team, playing partners. I practise every week and we also have a monthly routine,” he said.

In his address, the sponsor of the tournament, Chief Richard Akinjide (SAN), said that Ibadan is one of the few cities in Nigeria that can boast of many Golf Clubs, saying he once played golf as well.

“I have played golf in many parts of the world including USA, Australia, Japan. When I started, I used to play and put on the browns and when I moved to playing on green, I felt a different experience completely. I have been told that every hole is now a green and therefore the TGC is now on the same level with other Golf Clubs in Nigeria and anywhere in the world.

“I have to thank this Club (TGC) especially for honouring my wife with hole 3 which I always visit whenever I have the opportunity to be here and we are very honoured to be the sponsor of this great event,” Akinjide stated.

Patron of TGC, Major General CM Abraham in his remarks said golf is a global sport that touches all sectors of society irrespective of status, gender, age, race, or religion.

He gave kudos to Chief Akinjide for solely sponsoring the tourney saying, “for the past nine years, your contribution and fatherly role to TGC has endeared you to members of this great club”.

Meanwhile, earlier in his address, Captain of TGC, Dr John Dongo thanked the Akinjide family and Chief Jumoke Akinjide for keeping to their promises of sustaining the tournament in the last nine years.

Chairman, Local Organising Committee of the tourney, Wale Oshungbohun also appreciated the effort of Chief Akinjide especially his unrivalled passion for golf.
