Anthony Joshua returns to UK after car crash

Anthony Joshua has returned to the United Kingdom following a car crash in Nigeria that claimed the lives of two of his close friends and members of his team, Sina Ghami and Latif “Latz” Ayodele.

The 36-year-old was a passenger in a Lexus SUV that collided with a stationary truck on a major expressway near Lagos on Monday.

Joshua sustained minor injuries in the incident and was treated in the hospital before being discharged on New Year’s Eve.

He later flew back to the UK.

The crash occurred on Monday near Lagos when a Lexus SUV, in which Joshua was a passenger, collided with a stationary truck on a major expressway. Ghami and Ayodele died at the scene.

The funerals of Ghami and Ayodele are scheduled to take place at a London mosque on Sunday.

Nigerian police confirmed that the driver of the vehicle, Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, has been charged with causing death by dangerous driving and driving without a licence. The case was heard at a Sagamu Magistrates’ Court on Friday and adjourned until January 20.

Kayode was granted bail in the sum of 5,000,000 naira (£2,578) and was remanded pending the fulfilment of his bail conditions.

A spokesperson for Joshua earlier confirmed the deaths, stating, “It is with the deepest and most profound sadness that we confirm, following a road traffic accident in Lagos, Nigeria, the death of Sina Ghami and Kevin ‘Latif’ Ayodele.

“Both were close friends and integral members of Anthony’s team.”

Joshua, who has Nigerian heritage and family roots in Ogun State, was in the country following his recent knockout victory over Jake Paul in Miami.

He was reportedly travelling to visit relatives for New Year’s celebrations at the time of the crash.
