Arsenal agree £65m deal to sign Kai Havertz from cross-town rivals Chelsea

Arsenal and Chelsea have reached an agreement worth approximately £65m for the transfer of German forward, Kai Havertz.

The deal, which is still subject to finalization, grants permission for the player to engage in negotiations over personal terms and undergo a medical examination.

The initial fee for Havertz, who scored nine goals in 47 appearances for Chelsea last season, may potentially increase with additional performance-based incentives. The 24-year-old joined Chelsea from Bayer Leverkusen in 2020 for a substantial sum of about £71m.

Notably, Havertz played a pivotal role in securing victory for Chelsea in the exhilarating 2021 Champions League final against Manchester City, scoring the decisive goal. Now, the talented forward appears poised to make the journey across London, as Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta seeks to fortify his team following their qualification for the Champions League.

In their pursuit of further strengthening their squad, Arsenal is also in pursuit of English midfield sensation Declan Rice, who currently captains West Ham United. However, their second bid for the 24-year-old, amounting to a staggering £90m, was rejected on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, Chelsea is actively seeking to streamline their roster size and has additionally agreed to a £30m deal with Manchester City for the services of Croatian midfielder Mateo Kovacic, aged 29. Furthermore, their esteemed French midfielder, N’Golo Kante, aged 32, has committed to signing with Saudi Arabian champions Al-Ittihad upon the expiration of his contract at the end of June.

Under the stewardship of Chelsea’s new ownership, the club aims to avoid allowing players to enter the final two years of their contracts. Regrettably, Havertz, whose existing contract concludes in 2025, has yet to reach an agreement on an extension with the club.
