Winning the UEFA Champions League remains the highest achievement in club football, and for many clubs across Europe, lifting the trophy represents the final step in establishing continental greatness.

Leverkusen’s most painful European defeat came in 2002 when they lost the Champions League final to Real Madrid.

The match is remembered for Zinedine Zidane’s winning volley as the German side missed out on European glory during a season in which they also finished runners-up in the Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal.

The Spanish side lost the 2000 final to Real Madrid before suffering another defeat to Bayern Munich on penalties in 2001 after taking an early lead.

Schalke boast one of the largest fanbases in Germany, but have never managed to conquer Europe.

Their closest run came in 2011 when they reached the semi-finals under Ralf Rangnick before losing to Manchester United.

Galatasaray are among Turkey’s biggest clubs and have built a reputation for their strong home support and European competitiveness.

Although they won the UEFA Cup and UEFA Super Cup in 2000, their best Champions League campaigns ended in the quarter-finals in 2001 and 2013.
