Arsenal, Chelsea fans face long trip to Baku

After setting up an all-English final in the Europa League, Arsenal and Chelsea fans face a 2,468 mile journey to see who will be lifting the trophy.

The clubs are only separated by eight miles across London but face a trip to the eastern edge of Europe for the final in Baku, Azerbaijan.

There are currently no direct flights from London to Baku in the week of the final, so the journey would likely take fans more than 10 hours with long waits.

Going through seven countries, the train would take more than four days while driving would be approximately 58 hours without stopping.

Arsenal have already travelled to Baku this season when they beat Qarabag FK 3-0 in the competition’s group stage, so some fans will be familiar with the journey.

Aberdeen faced the longest journey in European competition history though when they faced Kazakhstan’s Kairat Almaty in the Europa League third qualifying round first leg in July 2015.

The Scottish side and the 65 fans that went with them travelled a staggering 3,415 miles through five time zones only to be beaten 2-1.

Chelsea have also travelled long distances in the competition before. Along with Tottenham and Wigan they’ve made the 2,220 mile trip to Russia to face Rubin Kazan where all of them tasted defeat on the road.
