Arsenal legend Ian Wright questions decision to sell Giroud to Chelsea

Arsenal legend Ian Wright has ripped into the club’s decision to sell Olivier Giroud, insisting ‘it doesn’t make sense’ to let the striker join Chelsea.

The France international is closing in on an £18million move to Stamford Bridge after the Gunners signed Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Michy Batshuayi agreed to join Borussia Dortmund on loan.

But despite the arrival of the prolific Aubameyang, Wright believes his former club are making a mistake by letting Giroud move on.

peaking before Aubameyang’s £55m move was confirmed, Wright told BBC Radio 5 Live: ‘Why would they sell him? It doesn’t make sense.

‘It really would be like lose a tenner, find a fiver. So we’ve got Lacazette and fingers crossed Aubameyang and no big guy on the bench.’

Wright, who scored 185 goals in 288 games for Arsenal, is concerned that the sale of Giroud will leave Wenger with no Plan B during the second half of the season as the club chase a Champions League spot.

‘You are talking about bringing on Danny Welbeck, or if Lacazette’s not playing then him,’ Wright added.

‘We haven’t got that guy that’s proven off the bench to come on and score goals.’

Giroud came on as a substitute for his last Arsenal appearance against Swansea on Tuesday night, but could not prevent Wenger’s men suffering a 3-1 defeat.

Nacho Monreal gave the visitors the lead at the Liberty Stadium, but the hosts hit back through a Sam Clucas brace and a Jordan Ayew goal after the break.
