Arsenal set to move for La Masia graduate who scored 19 Eredivise goals last season

According to L’Équipe, Xavi Simons is resisting a potential return to PSG, despite the French champions seeking to activate a €6 million buy-back clause in his deal.

The 20-year-old midfielder moved to PSV Eindhoven last summer, and clubs like Arsenal are keen to take advantage of the situation.

Since departing France, Simons’ development has skyrocketed, with his time at PSG hampering his progress despite showing glimpses of his potential in occasional first-team appearances. Despite being primarily a number eight, Simons emerged as the joint top-scorer in the Eredivisie this season, netting an impressive 19 league goals.

Not only did he excel in scoring goals, but Simons also ranked second in terms of goal-creating actions with 1.06 per 90 minutes. Additionally, he recorded 148 progressive carries, placing him second in the league for that statistic, highlighting his ability to advance the ball, create opportunities, and find the back of the net.

His remarkable form has attracted the attention of several top clubs, including PSG. However, Simons seems inclined to pursue a new challenge after a frustrating two years in Ligue 1 following his move from Barcelona in 2020 on a free transfer, having previously graduated from the esteemed La Masia academy.

Importantly, Simons has the freedom to choose his next club as long as they match the €6 million PSG requires, which presents a significant bargain for a player of his potential.

Although Simons is currently enjoying his holiday in the Dominican Republic and is not expected to return to Eindhoven until mid-July, it appears unlikely that he will remain at PSV for another season, despite his contract running until 2027.

To secure his services, Simons’ new club will need to offer him regular playing time. The sports daily suggests that Arsenal is among the interested parties, while PSV is attempting to persuade him to stay by offering him the captaincy.
