Arsenal striker Danny Welbeck set to return to training

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has revealed that forgotten man Danny Welbeck is just one week away from returning from long-term injury.

Welbeck, who joined the Gunners from Manchester United on deadline day in 2014, has been ravished by a serious injuries during his time in north London.

After making his return last season, the 26-year-old England striker suffered another devastating knee injury in May which subsequently ended his season and scuppered his chances of being included in Roy Hodgson’s Euro 2016 squad.

The early diagnosis was five months on the sidelines, however the severity of the injury pushed back any realistic return to action to nine months on the treatment table.

After being expected to miss the majority of the current season, Wenger delivered some positive news for Arsenal fans by revealing that Welbeck could potentially return in the new year.

‘Danny Welbeck is one week away from being back in full training with the squad,’ the Frenchman said in his press conference.

Into his third season with Arsenal, Welbeck’s injury problems have restricted him to just 36 Premier League appearances following his £16million move.

Wenger had previously suggested Welbeck was expected to return to training earlier this month, pushing the striker to target an eagerly anticipated comeback.

The Gunners, who are chasing their first Premier League title for 12 years, have been handed a somewhat favourable fixture list in January with the likes of Crystal Palace, Swansea and Burnley all potential fixtures for Welbeck to target.
