Arsenal thrash Everton to open five-point lead over Manchester City

Arsenal thrashed Everton 4-0 on Wednesday, with Gabriel Martinelli scoring two of the goals, extending their lead in the Premier League to five points.

This was one of Arsenal’s most significant wins of the season, as Everton had surprised them with a 1-0 win at home on February 4. However, they were unable to replicate that success at Emirates Stadium.

Bukayo Saka scored the first goal for Arsenal with a powerful shot that went straight into the roof of the net from a difficult angle in the 40th minute. Just before halftime, Saka set up Martinelli, who scored with a low finish in the first minute of first-half stoppage time.

In the 71st minute, Martin Odegaard converted a cut-back from Leandro Trossard, and Martinelli scored his second goal of the game in the 80th minute to complete a dominant performance from Arsenal. Mikel Arteta’s team has now played the same number of games (25 out of 38) as second-place Manchester City.

This was Arsenal’s second-largest victory of the season, with their only larger win being a 5-0 victory over Nottingham Forest in October.

Arsenal has won three consecutive games after a brief rough patch in which they collected just one point from a possible nine, including a loss to Manchester City. Arsenal last won the league in 2004 and is looking to do so again.

Everton, under newly appointed manager Sean Dyche, has lost three of its last four games and is in third-to-last place in the relegation zone. The Merseyside club has played one more game than the other teams in danger of relegation.
