… surgery under consideration

Arsenal will assess the extent of William Saliba’s persistent back injury when the France defender returns to the club following the FIFA World Cup, with surgery among the options being considered.

The 25-year-old centre-back has been managing the injury for several weeks and carried the problem throughout France’s World Cup campaign. The issue worsened during France’s 2-1 semi-final defeat to Spain on Wednesday, forcing Saliba off after just 30 minutes.

If surgery is deemed necessary after further medical assessment in London, the Arsenal defender could face a lengthy spell on the sidelines.

Back problem

Saliba revealed earlier during the tournament that he had been playing through pain for months to help both club and country.

“I’ve had some minor niggles for several months. I’ve been gritting my teeth because there was the Champions League and the Premier League.

“The World Cup comes round only once every four years, so you’ve got to grit your teeth,” he said.

The defender missed France’s final Group-stage match against Norway before returning for the knockout rounds.

Key player for Arsenal

Saliba remains one of Arsenal’s most influential defenders after making 50 appearances in all competitions last season.

He played a major role as Mikel Arteta’s side ended a 22-year wait for the Premier League title and also reached the UEFA Champions League final.

His potential absence would be a significant concern for Arsenal as preparations begin for the new season.

France still have one match remaining

Despite missing out on a place in the World Cup final, France still have one fixture left at the tournament.

Didier Deschamps’ side will face England in the third-place play-off on Saturday, although Saliba’s participation remains doubtful following his early withdrawal against Spain.

Arsenal’s medical staff are expected to make a final decision on Saliba’s back injury and his treatment plan once he returns to the club after France’s World Cup campaign concludes.
