Arsene Wenger has made the surprise admission that Mesut Ozil’s lack of versatility always presents him with a selection headache.
Ozil has been in inspired form this season, scoring six goals in all competitions, including his first ever professional hat-trick, from his preferred No.10 role.
The return to full fitness of Olivier Giroud, however, presents Wenger with the conundrum of trying to shoehorn his two most potent forwards into his starting line-up.
Alexis Sanchez has impressed in the Frenchman’s absence, adapting manfully to the demands of a central striking role, but Wenger admits he might have to shunt him back to the wing due to Ozil’s inflexibility.
‘They are completely different, but they can as well play together,’ he said. ‘[If Giroud starts] I have to move Alexis out as I always have that problem with Ozil being behind the striker, he cannot move much deeper.
‘As [if you are] much deeper, you need defensively to work. So one [striker] would have to move wide. And if you move one of them wide, it can only be Alexis.
‘[Alexis and Giroud] are two top players. It is not a bad option – it is a good option to have. To leave quality players out is tough. But the toughest thing is not to have quality players.’
