Arsene Wenger’s brother rubbishes claims Arsenal boss and Sir Alex Ferguson hated each other

The Frenchman and the former Manchester United boss are the Premier League’s greatest ever rivals but Wenger’s older brother says they had a good relationship.

Arsene Wenger ‘s brother has described the long-held belief that the Arsenal manager and Sir Alex Ferguson hated each other as “rubbish”.

The French boss’s older brother Guy was in attendance for the legendary Manchester United manager’s final game against the Gunners, a 1-1 draw at the Emirates in April 2013.

And the 71-year-old, who ran the Wenger family car parts business in Alsace for 42 years, says he shared a drink with the Premier League’s two greatest rivals after the match.

“People thought he and [Sir Alex] Ferguson hated each other,” he told The Telegraph .

“Rubbish. I was with them. I think it was the last time Ferguson was at Arsenal with Manchester United. We drank two bottles of Bordeaux after the game.”

The rivalry between Wenger and Ferguson certainly cooled outwardly in the latter years of the Scot’s reign at Old Trafford, coinciding with Arsenal taking a reluctant step back from the Premier League title race.

Those turn-of-the-century years where the Gunners and United were the two monoliths of the English game were a little different though.

Wenger and Sir Alex had several high-profile spats, most notably the infamous “Battle of the Buffet” food fight in the Old Trafford tunnel, after champions Arsenal had lost 2-0 in October 2004.
