Atletico Madrid defeated Nigeria 3-2 in an entertaining friendly encounter played at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium on Tuesday evening.
Goals from Angel Correa, Fernando Torres and Borja Garces denied the Super Eagles B side a victory, despite scoring two top quality goals through Kelechi Nwakali and second-half substitute Usman Mohammed – whose effort evoked memories of country legend Austin Jay Jay Okocha.
Atletico Madrid thus emerged as winners of the inaugural GOtv Max Cup after the hard-earned win over the Super Eagles’ B team at the Nest of Champions in Uyo.
It was Kelechi Nwakali that got the opener and it was a beauty to behold; firing in from 20 yards in the 32nd minute.
Th celebration for Nigeria was however short-lived as Angel Correa who was voted the MVP of the game got the equaliser for Atletico barely a minute later.
The reigning Europa League kings raced in front in the second half through their departing legend Fernando Torres who nodded in the ball in the 64th minute.
If Nwakali’s goal was a beauty to behold, Usman Mohammed bettered that by mesmerising the Atletico defence before making it 2-2 for Nigeria.
Slack defending by the Eagles saw them concede another goal in the 85th as Borja Garces scored what prove to the winning goal.
