AU, NSC host workshop on sports policy implementation in Abuja

The African Union Sports Council Region 2, in collaboration with the National Sports Commission (NSC), has convened a workshop on the popularisation of the African Union policy for the sustainable development of sports in Africa.

The workshop, held at BON Hotels in Abuja, brings together Sports Directors from West Africa to discuss strategies for implementing the AU’s sports policy framework.

Speaking at the Workshop, Dr Angel Martins, A.G. Director of Social Development, Culture and Sports, African Union, emphasised the importance of member states’ contributions to the Union’s budget, ensuring they’re in good standing and avoiding sanctions.

“Our financial Secretary is always in engagement with all the member states to ensure that they are in good standing with the Union,” she said.

Martins stated that the African Union is committed to nurturing talents and promoting the African Games, preparing athletes for international competitions.

“The African Union really ensures that member states participate in the African Games so that talents is nurtured and athletes are prepared for those competitions,” she added.

Traditional games are a vital part of Africa’s heritage, and the AU aims to incorporate them into school systems.

“Through this workshop and by popularising the policy, we are hoping that member states will assist us in finding a way of getting these traditional games incorporated in the school system and also sell them to other continents,” Martins said.

The workshop is part of the AU’s efforts to drive sustainable sports development in Africa, promoting unity and cooperation among member states. The AU’s vision for African sports is clear: promote sustainable development, nurture talents, and showcase traditional games globally.

The workshop is being held under the leadership of Mallam Shehu Dikko, Chairman, National Sports Commission, Hon. Bukola Olopade, D.G, National Sports Commission, and Dr Shamshu Mustapha, Secretary General, African Union Sports Council Region 2.
