Nigeria Customs Female Basketball Club, on Tuesday, outscored Equity Bank Hawks of Kenya 83-53 to end in the 5th position at the Africa Women Basketball League (AWBL) in Alexandria, Egypt.
The Border Girls won four out of the seven games played during the tournament. They had qualified for the continental showpiece having picked one of the two tickets from the FIBA Africa Zone 3 qualifiers which was held in Abuja earlier this month.
Customs started the competition on a very promising note with a 57-46 points win over the University of Douala of Cameroon in their opening group game before losing to Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) by 73-53 points in the second game. The team also lost to the sporting of Alexandria Egypt 96-57.
However, the fourth game witnessed a turnaround as the Border Girls beat CNSS Basketball Club of DR Congo 66-57 to qualify for the round of 8 but unfortunately lost in the quarterfinal to Inter Clubs of Angola by 65-89 points.
However, in the classification game, Customs beat Overdose Up Station of Cameroun 67-58 to qualify for 5-6 placement. It was a glorious ending for the Border Girls as the last game against Equity Bank Hawks of Kenya in 5-6 placement went in their favour of with 83-53 points.
The 10 clubs that participated in the tournament are CNSS Basketball Club (DR Congo), Equity Bank (Kenya), five-time champions Inter Clubs (Angola), KPA (Kenya), Overdose Up Station (Cameroun) and REG (Rwanda Energy Group).
Others are host Sporting of Alexandria (Egypt), University of Douala (Cameroun), Nigeria Customs Service and ASPAC of Benin Republic. The Border Girls ended in overall 5th position.
