Bayern Munich back on top of Bundesliga after 2-0 win over Hertha Berlin

Bayern Munich reclaimed the top spot of the Bundesliga standings with a 2-0 victory over Hertha Berlin on Sunday.

The Bavarian powerhouse took the lead in the 69th minute with a diving header from Serge Gnabry to a Joshua Kimmich cross. Kingsley Coman then sealed the win in the 79th minute with another goal assisted by Kimmich.

The win was enough to put Bayern one point clear of Borussia Dortmund with four rounds left. Dortmund had drawn 1-1 with Bochum on Friday and now needs help from Bayern’s remaining opponents to end its 10-year reign as German champions.

Hertha Berlin, who has conceded ten goals in their last three games, was not expected to challenge Bayern. The visitors relied on goalkeeper Oliver Christensen to keep the score down and avoid a heavier loss. Hertha remains at the bottom of the league and six points away from the relegation playoff spot, making it the prime candidate for relegation.

Bayern dominated the first half but struggled to break through Hertha’s hard-working defense. Christensen made a crucial save from Gnabry, while Sadio Mane was unable to convert a couple of promising crosses from Coman. The home fans were disappointed with Bayern’s lack of goals in the first half and voiced their concerns with whistles.

The highly-rated teenager Ibrahim Maza made his debut for Hertha in the 65th minute, but it was Bayern’s forward who scored four minutes later to secure the win for the home team. The fans sang with the players after the game, “German champion will only be FCB (FC Bayern).”

With the win, Bayern Munich is on track to secure their 31st German championship. They will face Werder Bremen, Schalke, Leipzig, and Cologne in their remaining matches, with Dortmund hoping for their slip-ups to clinch the title.
