Bournemouth 1 Sunderland 2: Jermain Defoe scores late penalty as 10-men Black Cats win first Premier League match of season

Relief for under-fire David Moyes who secured a smash and grab despite Steven Pienaar’s red – while Defoe is now eighth all time Premier Leauge scorer

JERMAIN DEFORE scored a late penalty as 10-men Sunderland won their first Premier League match of season at Bournemouth.

Without the goals of Callum Wilson for the Cherries, Dan Gosling scored after 11 minutes as a ball was played in behind to Adam Smith who crossed for the midfielder to chest in from close range.

But against the run of play, ex-Everton striker Victor Anichebe equalised to score his first goal for the Black Cats in front of 1,200 noisy away fans, rifling into the roof of the net after turning Simon Francis inside the box.

David Moyes‘ strugglers made life more difficult for themselves on 59 minutes when South African midfielder Steven Pienaar was shown a second yellow for a crude foul on Junior Stanislas.

Stanislas hit the post moments later as Bournemouth banged on the door, but Sunderland took the lead when Anichebe was brought down by Smith – and Jermain Defore made no mistake.

Jordan Pickford in the Sunderland net made a big save from a Josh King volley – who could get a retrospective ban after an unseen stamp on Anichebe as the Black Cats hung on for the win.
