Boxing: Anthony Joshua’s next fight; potential opponents, dates

Just before the incident that claimed the lives of two of his friends, Antony Joshua had just defeated Jake Paul after six rounds of an intense contest.

While celebrating his victory at the end of the bout, the two-time heavyweight champion called out Tyson Fury for a challenge following the latter’s constant jabs at him.

The highly anticipated super-fight between the two British heavyweight champions was speculated to have been put on hold following a fatal car crash in Nigeria involving Joshua and his entourage in December 2025.

However, a bit of fresh air was breathed after Joshua posted a video on his page to speak to people for the first time since he lost his two friends.

Despite setbacks, promoters and fighters still suggest a 2026 date, possibly with warm-up fights, that could happen in locations like Riyadh or even Old Trafford in the UK.

Potential opponents

Tyson Fury (The Mega-Fight)

Following Fury’s latest “retirement,” reports suggest he is returning to face Arslanbek Makhmudov in April 2026. If both Fury and Joshua win their respective Spring bouts, the path is clear for a September 2026 blockbuster.

Fabio Wardley (The Title Bid)

Matchroom Boxing promoter Eddie Hearn told talkSPORT that Joshua needs to fight Fabio Wardley: “If he really wants to fight, fight Moses [Itauma], fight Moses now. Fight Fabio Wardley now.

With Oleksandr Usyk vacating the WBO belt, Fabio Wardley has emerged as a full champion. Wardley vs. Joshua would be a massive domestic clash. If the Fury fight hits another contractual snag, Joshua may fight Wardley to become a three-time world champion.

Daniel Dubois (The Rematch)

While fans initially clamoured for an immediate rematch after Joshua’s loss at Wembley, the fight was put on hold. Dubois’ promoter, Frank Warren, has stated that Joshua is currently “out of the mandatory picture,” meaning a rematch likely won’t happen until late 2026 or 2027 if AJ regains a high ranking.
