BREAKING: Heynckes to take over as Bayern coach until end of season

Bayern Munich have officially announced Jupp Heynckes will return to the club as head coach until the end of the season following the sacking of Carlo Ancelotti.

At the age of 72, Heynckes has made a surprise return to football management after being appointed by the Bundesliga champions.

The German has not managed a club since leading Bayern to an historic treble in the 2012/13 season, but will come out of retirement to try and kickstart their so far sub-par campaign.

Carlo Ancelotti was sacked last month following the 3-0 defeat to PSG in the Champions League, in which he surprisingly left out Ribery, Robben and Hummels, leading to various reports suggesting there was a player revolt against the Italian.

Bayern sit five points behind league leaders Borussia Dortmund after seven games played.

Heynckes has already enjoyed three trophy-laden spells in the Bayern dugout. He will be looking to add to the three Bundesliga titles he won in 1989, 1990 and 2013.

Despite a rather unsuccessful 2011/12 campaign, in which Bayern only won the German Super Cup, the club trusted Heynckes ahead of the 2012/13 season, and that proved to be one the best decisions in their history.

They went on to win the Bundesliga, German Cup and Champions League, a legendary treble after which Heynckes said his last goodbye.

The German tactician won FIFA’s award for the Best Coach of 2013 and decided to end his long managerial career on a high… until now.

Heynckes first words as Bayern’s new coach were: ‘I would not have returned to any other club in the world, but Bayern Munich is a labour of love for me.’

He will take over at the club on Monday and his first game in charge will be when Bayern host SC Freiburg on Saturday 14 October.
