BREAKING: O’Neill sacked by Nottingham Forest

Martin O’Neill has been sacked as manager of Nottingham Forest, five days after his assistant Roy Keane departed the Championship club.

The Northern Irishman, who won two European Cups with the Reds as a player, was appointed manager at the City Ground in January.

His exit comes less than a week after assistant Roy Keane left the club.

Forest were four points outside the Championship play-offs when O’Neill, 67, took charge but he was unable to guide them to a top-six finish.

The former Leicester City, Celtic, Aston Villa and Republic of Ireland boss won eight of his 19 games in charge of the club after replacing Aitor Karanka.

His departure leaves them looking for a 12th permanent boss in eight years.

In a short two-sentence statement on the club website, Forest said they “would like to thank Martin for all his efforts during his time at the City Ground and wish him well for the future”.
