The Super Eagles have arrived at the Malam Aminu Kano International Airport, Kano State, after their ordeal in Libya ahead of the 2025 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier.
Super Eagles captain, William Troost-Ekong disclosed this via X, stating, “BACK HOME 🇳🇬 SAFE & SOUND.
“Proud of this team, NAIJA SPIRIT can’t be broken. Throw at us what you want, it’s in our blood to overcome. Ive seen a lot in my 10 years with this group, but nothing like this, an experience that has brought us even closer TOGETHER.”
Also forward, Victor Boniface, in a post on X on Monday, said the players and officials have arrived in Nigeria.
“Back to Nigeria 🇳🇬❤️❤️ Next of kin you try ooooo,” Boniface wrote.
The Super Eagles, who departed Nigeria on Sunday, had their flight unexpectedly diverted to a remote airport far from the match venue, resulting in an additional three-hour road journey to their destination.
The situation worsened as the players, pilots, and other personnel were stranded at the Libyan airport for over 13 hours without access to necessities like food, water, or a place to rest.
Pictures of the players sleeping on chairs were shared by Troost-Ekong and some other players prompting condemnation from Nigerian authorities.
However, the team has now landed in Kano after their flight was cleared to take off in Libya.
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) had earlier announced the commencement of an investigation into the ill-treatment of Super Eagles players by Libyan authorities at the Al Abaq Airport in the North African country.
CAF said its Disciplinary Board for Investigation has commenced an investigation into the accident, noting that appropriate action will be taken against those who violated the Federation’s rules.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, NiDCOM boss, Abike Dabiri-Erewa and former Governor of Abia state, Orji Uzor-Kalu all condemned the incident.
