BREAKING: Tinubu honours D’Tigress with National awards, $100,000 each for Afrobasket win

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has bestowed national honours on Nigeria’s women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, in recognition of their historic triumph at the 2025 FIBA Women’s Afrobasket Championship.

Each member of the championship-winning team will receive a cash reward of $100,000, while members of the technical crew will receive $50,000 each for their contribution to the team’s remarkable success.

The announcement was made on Monday during a special reception held at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, where President Tinubu hosted the victorious team.

In his remarks, President Tinubu praised the players for their exceptional performance, highlighting their resilience, discipline, and pride in representing the country.

“You have demonstrated what it means to wear the green-white-green with honour. You are role models to millions of our youth and a symbol of national pride,” the President said.

D’Tigress secured Nigeria’s fourth consecutive Afrobasket title after a thrilling final against Senegal, solidifying the country’s dominance in African women’s basketball and reinforcing its reputation as a continental basketball powerhouse.

President Tinubu’s gesture marks a significant moment of recognition for the team’s outstanding achievement and a renewed commitment to supporting Nigerian athletes at the highest level.
