Chelsea’s push for a comeback win was undone in stoppage time as Brentford substitute, Fabio Carvalho struck an injury-time equaliser to secure a 2-2 draw at the Gtech Community Stadium.
The Blues thought they had sealed all three points when Moises Caicedo rifled a spectacular shot into the top corner with five minutes left. But their defensive frailties reappeared late on, allowing Brentford to snatch a share of the spoils.
Brentford had stunned the visitors in the first half, taking the lead against the run of play. Kevin Schade’s effort deflected off a Chelsea defender and wrong-footed goalkeeper Robert Sanchez, giving the home side a surprise advantage.
Chelsea enjoyed the bulk of possession but struggled to break through Brentford’s well-organised back line before the break. Joao Pedro had the best of the early chances, but his effort was blocked, while Enzo Fernandez rattled the post directly from a corner.
Manager Enzo Maresca turned to his bench at the interval, bringing on Cole Palmer, Marc Cucurella and Reece James in search of more creativity and drive. The changes immediately tilted the momentum Chelsea’s way.
Palmer, making his return after missing two matches through injury, made the impact Maresca hoped for. Just minutes after coming on, he swept home from close range after Joao Pedro kept an Enzo Fernandez cross alive in the box.
The equaliser galvanised Chelsea, who pressed Brentford relentlessly. Robert Sanchez, however, had to make a superb save at the other end to deny Schade from restoring Brentford’s lead.
As the second half wore on, Chelsea’s pressure told. Pedro Neto and Palmer combined smartly on the right flank, stretching Brentford’s defence, while substitute Tyrique George went close to scoring his first senior goal.
A loose clearance fell kindly to Caicedo on the edge of the area, and he unleashed a thunderous strike into the top corner, leaving goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher with no chance.
Chelsea’s travelling supporters erupted, believing the game was finally theirs. Caicedo’s teammates mobbed him, celebrating what looked like a decisive late winner.
But deep into added time, Chelsea’s defence faltered. A bouncing ball evaded everyone inside the penalty box and reached the unmarked Carvalho at the back post. The substitute calmly slotted past Sanchez to make it 2-2.
Chelsea must now regroup quickly as attention shifts to Europe, as they travel to Germany for a Champions League opener against Bayern Munich on Wednesday before returning to domestic action at Old Trafford against Manchester United next weekend.
