Both the Enyimba FC of Aba and MFM FC of Lagos triumphed in the first leg matches of the second round of the CAF club competitions decided on Wednesday.
While Enyimba defeated hosts Energie FC 2-0 at Stade de l’Amitie Mathieu Kerekou, Cotonou, Benin Republic, MFM, playing at home at the Agege Stadium, beat MC Alger 2-1.
Enyimba are campaigning in the Confederation Cup, while MFM FC are making their debut in the CAF Champions League.
Nigeria’s other represenative in the Confederation Cup, Akwa United, lost 0-1 to Al-Ittihad of Libya at Sfax, Tunisia, where the Libyans ahve adopted as their home groud.
The only goal of the match was headed home by Muad Eisa with barely ten minutes to the end of the match.
Enyimba’s two goals came in the early minutes of the match with an own goal in the fourth minute. Five minutes after, Austine doubled the lead for the two-time CAF Champions League winners. With about nine minutes to the end, the Nigerian representatives missed the opportunity to score a third goal when Stephen Chukwude missed a penalty kick.
In Lagos, MFM shot into the lead in the tenth minute when Chijioke Akuneto converted a penalty kick awarded his side.
However, the Algerians drew level nine minutes after resumption for the second half. But Monsuru Bashiru restored MFM’s lead with six minutes to end the match.
